How Much Is Your Laptop Hurting Your Health?

Reported by Glam on Thursday, 23 September 2010

This post from Linda Melone at AOL Health caught our eye, so we're sharing it with you. Is your laptop ruining your health? Experts say it's a real issue. Laptop sales surpassed desktop sales for the first time in 2008 and some colleges even require them. Text-neck, Laptop-itis and infertility top the list of potential hazards as more people use them and for longer periods of time. Posture Pitfalls Before laptops, students studied bent over a book instead of a computer, notes Dean L. Fishman, founder of the Text Neck Institute in Florida. But the postural issues seen today were virtually unheard of years ago. The difference is the time spent in the bent-over position, Fishman said. "Today, kids ages 8 to 18 years old spend an average of seven and a half hours a day on entertainment media in addition to the time spent hunched over books," he said. Over time that hunch can become permanent. "We used to see degenerative neck issues in people ages 20 to 40. Now we're seeing these changes in much younger teenagers." The problem lies in your head, literally. The average head weighs from eight to 10 pounds, says Fishman. All goes well when you're in "anatomical neutral" with the center of your ears over the center of your shoulders and your eyes looking straight ahead. Bending your neck down to look at a keyboard quickly changes everything. Keep reading on AOL Health. Post from: BlissTree How Much Is Your Laptop Hurting Your Health?

Testimonial

Wow! He is amazing!! I went to Dr. Dean Fishman at Plantation Spine & Sports Rehab because my shoulder injury and surgery was causing pain and a lack of proper motion. Today my shoulder had gained back proper motion and strength, while reducing much of the discomfort. It is incredible. My shoulder was dramatically improved. Dr. Fishman has provided me with courtesy and professional care while always paying attention to my well being.
